As a child growing up in Harlem and the Bronx in New York City, I was drawn to the outdoors and nature, and I brought it indoors the day I purchased my first bonsai plant when I was in my twenties. I was passionate and meticulous about learning the art and techniques used to create microcosmic nature scenes in a pot! On my own, I studied and researched the meditative Asian art process of pruning to form a perfect tree canopy--one that exhibits a sense of graceful movement and attitude, like a dancer's fluid motions captured in time by a photograph.

I went on to make plants my career and pursued  horticulture at the prestigious New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). I transitioned from miniature bonsai to full grown trees and shrubs. Unlike most tree care professionals, I was fortunate to be able to cultivate my practice in a non-production environment over the course of ten years and through apprenticeships with the very best in the horticultural field. I attended professional classes, seminars, conferences and workshops covering all aspects of tree care maintenance and climbing during this time. In essence, I lived and breathed horticulture.

I've always considered myself lucky to have learned in a professional environment where doing the technically correct procedure -- not necessarily the quickest or cheapest (as is the often the case with large tree care companies) -- was the rule.

In 1993 I received arborist certification from the International Society of Arboriculture and in 1996 won the New York State Tree Climbing Competition.

In 1997, after ten years, I left NYBG to pursue a long-held dream to own and operate a different kind of small tree and shrub care company -- one that doesn't sacrifice quality tree and shrub care as large companies often must to meet production quotas. I've too often observe the results of what I call the "fast food version of tree care" -- when a large company has overwhelming overhead and responsibility dispersed over too many employees -- jobs are often rushed, employees are rarely educated -- all at the expense of your trees' and shrubs' health, sometimes your safety, and always your wallet!

As a smaller company, you can be sure that all work -- pruning, trimming, removals, and stump grinding -- are performed by me, or by my highly-trained and closely supervised assistants who have worked by my side for many years.

Often, the most qualified and knowledgeable individuals in a tree company recommend, sell, and organize the work, while the employee performing the work lacks the necessary degree of expertise and experience to competently do the job. You can be sure that as the owner, with a vested interest in my company, I will take care of all details. Quality tree care is my rule.

*I'm a father with two beautiful, smart and talented daughters and live with my wife in Northern Manhattan.
